HOGS is the UK’s first optical ground station designed for quantum key distribution (QKD), located at Heriot-Watt University’s Research Park in Edinburgh
A £2.5 million investment, HOGS focuses on enabling ultra-secure satellite-to-ground communication using single photons for QKD
Unlike traditional encryption, QKD relies on quantum physics principles, making it resistant to future quantum computer attacks
HOGS is a key component of the UK’s national quantum strategy and serves as a testbed for the Integrated Quantum Networks Hub
It is directly connected to Heriot-Watt’s quantum labs via a dark fiber network, enabling advanced research and testing of quantum networking technologies
Its high-latitude location enhances capabilities for tracking polar orbiting satellites and space debris, addressing growing concerns about satellite constellations
HOGS will also study high-speed classical optical communications, potentially contributing to 6G and other future terrestrial networks
The facility supports Scotland’s space and quantum industries by providing shared infrastructure for optics, sensors, and secure communication system development
HOGS prioritizes workforce development through school visits, satellite tracking demonstrations, and hands-on experience for undergraduate and PhD students
Funded by the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, the project involves Heriot-Watt, Bristol, Strathclyde, and York universities
